With “Jumbo,” Indonesia establishes itself on the global animation scene

With over 9.6 million viewers in two months, “Jumbo” has become the biggest animated hit in Southeast Asia. This is a historic breakthrough for Indonesian cinema, as the film prepares for its international release next month.

A “turning point for the Indonesian film industry, but also the signal of a new era for the Southeast Asian animation industry on the global stage,” describes Batam News Asia .

Released in Indonesia during the Lebaran holiday – which follows the month of Ramadan – the animated film Jumbo, produced by local studio Visinema Pictures, became the biggest hit in the history of Indonesian animation in just a few weeks. By mid-May, it had attracted over 9.6 million viewers and grossed $20 million (over €17 million), dethroning Disney's Frozen 2 and becoming the highest-grossing animated film in history in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia.

With an international release scheduled for June 2025 in 17 countries, from Southeast Asia to Central Europe, including Mongolia, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and several Central Asian states, Jumbo could well establish itself as a global success.
